How does one check a digital test pressure on colour correctness?
Adapted extracts from the updated process standard offset printing, cape. 5
Bases
The purpose of a test pressure is, in a certain stage of the correction or after the end of the reproduction to make the quality to be expected of the edition pressure exactly as technically possibly obviously.

With the reproduction delivered ones provided test pressure standardises is valid as a proof of the fact that the present picture impression is also attainable in the standardised edition pressure.

Demands
Universal
Obligation the test pressure:
Data for the test pressure have to do the conditions of the cape. 4 of the process standard offset printing [5-3, 5-4] fulfil. It is basic from the delivered data continuance on the respective data carrier to proofen.

Corrections:
After in colour or other important corrections a new test pressure should be provided basically. It is renounced here, the corrections must be exactly noted in kind and situation on the pressure. Then no colour-obliging test pressure is given. Rubout characters are to be used to German Institute for Standardization 16549 [5-9].

Rasterung:
As far as possible the test pressure or pressure with the same grid programme and with the same picture orientation aufgerastert should be as they are planned for the edition pressure. That has to represent the results of an Objektmoirés only appearing with the edition pressure which has omitted to make suitably aufgerasterte test pressure or pressures or has not pointed out the principal to the possibly disagreeable results of a missing check on Objektmoiré. Moiréeffekte which would also have appeared with tonwertglatten [without structure] original have to represent the ausbelichtende company or the following process steps.

Abmusterungsbedingungen:
Colour temperature in 5000 K, density of light in 2000 lx, see cape. 1.6 of the process standard offset printing [5-3].

Refining:
If an off-line surface refining [varnish, concealing] of the edition is planned, an improved test pressure and secondly an unimproved copy should be delivered to the edition printer first [with Inline refining the unimproved presentation is unessential]. Picture impression and measuring values can change because by improving strongly, this is also valid with the most careful process guidance.

Digital test pressure
An Ugra/fogra-media wedge CMYK-TIFF must stand [5-1] on the test pressure. His colour values CIELAB must correspond to the pressure condition intended for the edition pressure. Calculated roughly, visual control is possible under norm light in 5000 K with the help of the in each case appropriate "authoritative pressure" [5-5], there a media wedge is printed standardised. For high claims to the colour obligation colour-metrical measurements must occur. Besides, the colour values CIELAB of all colour fields are determined and with on ISO 12647-2 compared [5-3, 5-4] to straightened rated values of the Excel table delivered with the media wedge, e.g., for the paper types 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the offset. Is valid for the divergences of the rated values: The average of all colour distances CIELAB is allowed to do 4, the maximum value may not cross 10. A maximum divergence of 3 is valid for the colour of the carrier material. The colours of the full tones CMYK should lie possibly within 2.5, they must lie, in any case, within 5. Measuring terms: White base, 0/45 or 45/0, 2 ° observers, D50, CIELAB. To the white base see the appendix to this extract.

In the footing line of the test pressure file name and date are to be given as well as the names of the used source profiles and simulation profiles or the names of the characterisation tables on which the issue profiles are based [example: fogra 23].

As far as possible the digital test pressure with the same grid programme and with the same picture orientation aufgerastert should be as this is planned for the edition pressure, see tips.

Tip
Now and then one so-called „media-neutral test pressure“ is propagated, he shows the picture impression under full exploitation of the colour extent of the respective test printer. If it concerns, besides, a costly test pressure system with a very big colour extent, this cannot be realised possibly in the offset printing with the intended Bedruckstofftyp. Hence, such a test pressure is not colour-obligingly for the edition. One recognises a too big colour extent by comparison in the full tone surfaces of the Ugra/fogra of media wedge CMYK to measured colour values CIELAB with that of the intended pressure condition of the edition. These are given in the media wedge Excel file.

If the demand is not fulfilled after auflagendruckgemäß to aufgerastertem test pressure or pressure, Objektmoiréstrukturen [can be recognised, e.g., with textile motives] not already in the approach. Then they appear eventl. later with the edition pressure and cause there considerably higher costs than by the production of a suitably aufgerasterten presentation would have originated.

Instruction 5C of the process standard offset printing [5-3]:
Colour-metrical full control of a digital test pressure
5C1
If with the edition pressure an off-line surface refining is planned, should exist as far as possible improved like an unimproved test pressure. Then only latter is to be checked as follows.

5C2
It is found out whether on the test pressure corrections are marked. If these concern not only inessential parts, the test pressure shows no obliging presentation for the edition pressure. The principal or the repro is to be informed, if necessary the second test pressure is to be made. Otherwise further too 5C3.

5C3
The Ugra/fogra-media wedge CMYK-TIFF of the test pressure will become on white base, paper proposals see appendix] measured out and it the colour divergences CIELAB to on ISO/D SHARP 12647-2:2003 to straightened rated values of the topical Excel file of the media wedge compared.

5C4
The average of all colour distances CIELAB may not cross the value 4, the maximum value the value 10 and the colour distance of the carrier material the value 3. The full tones of the coloured primary colours CMY should agree possibly within 2.5 with the rated values, anyway, nevertheless, within 5. If all conditions are fulfilled the test pressure is colour-obligingly for the simulated pressure condition. Otherwise the principal or the repro is to be informed, if necessary the second test pressure or a pressure is to be made for safety's sake.

Tip

The rated values for one in the Excel file of the media wedge grasped pressure condition, e.g., FM grid, cannot be derived from the values of a characterisation table. fogra extracts to the legal owners of a media wedge with pleasure the suitable rated values from a provided characterisation table after ISO 12642 [IT8.7 / 3] or ECI 2002.

Instruction 5fa of the process standard offset printing:
Simulation of the offset printing on a digital test printer with the help of colour management ICC
5F1
It is ascertained with which ICC profile a delivered CMYK record has been separated. This profile is to be delivered basically with the data, see media standard pressure in 2003. If no CMYK data separate RGB-or CIELAB data were delivered, these must be transformed first with an ICC profile suitable for the intended editions-pressure condition as an aim profile and the respective input profile as a source profile in the CMYK space. The erstere profile should exist at the pressure company, the input profile should be provided by the data-delivering company. With the transformation the perception-related colour extent adaptation method is to be chosen [En.: perceptual rendering intent]. Characterisation data for standardised pressure terms can be downloaded with fogra. On it based profiles of the ECI, www.eci.org.

5F2
For the test printer 17B of the process standard offset printing an ICC profile is generated according to the instruction. If the test printer can use edition paper, the shaping and the other test pressure with the intended edition paper should occur. As a substitute another edition paper of the same paper class can be also used after ISO 12647-2 [5-6, 5-7], for both purposes. If certain carrier materials are prescribed by the manufacturer, one chooses to the edition paper after shine and colour most near the coming material.

5F3
To the CMYK record of the order it is put of the Ugra/fogra media wedge CMYK-TIFF. The combination is transformed in the CMYK space of the test printer. Besides, profile serves in 5F1 used ICC-[issue] as a simulation profile and the printer profile generated in step 5F2 as an aim profile. By use of edition paper the relatively colour-metrical adaptation is to be chosen, with an in colour deviating test pressure bearer, nevertheless, the absolutely colour-metrical adaptation.

5F4
Exactly those CIELAB values should appear on the test pressure in the Ugra/FOPGRA media wedge CMYK-TIFF, in for the profile production use characterisation table after ISO 12642 [5-8] for the suitable CMYK values stood. For practically all important pressure terms the CIELAB values are given in the Excel table to the Ugra/fogra-media wedge CMYK. To the check on success of the measure see the instruction 5C.

Tip
Of course other possibilities for the production of a digital test pressure appropriate for edition also make sense, as an example the GMG method would be called.
