FOGRA rub off and carbonating test device (FOGRA WIKAT)
In 1994 FOGRA did research work for Bundesverband Druck E.V. (German Printing Industries Federation) with the aim of recording the pressures that prints are exposed to during converting or bookbinding. With the help of video images and pressure sensitive films implanted into the paper critical areas in the different types of machines were located. lf a sheet passes such a "problem zone" rub-off and carbonating can damage the print especially if the ink is not completely dry or if problematic paper has been used. Different intensities of colour on the pressure sensitive films mean different pressure stresses on the sheets. By means of spectral photometric analysis exact values were obtained and the stress that a sheet must be able to withstand in order to be properly converted was calculated.
From many contacts with bookbinders it became evident that at the moment there is no possibility for the machine operators in binderies and converting shops to give a reliable forecast, if a sheet will be damaged by rub-off or carbonating during its run through the converting or bookbinding machines. Because of this unsatisfying situation FOGRA developed a test device which simulates the stresses that a sheet or a signature is subjected to during bookbinding or converting. The emphasis was put on the practability. The FOGRA rub off and carbonating test device (FOGRA WIKAT) offers the following features:
• low weight and small dimensions
• easy handling
• transportable, sturdy construction
• hardly any maintainance
• rub-off and carbonating can be tested by using different insets
• quick test results
• only simple tools required (adhesive tape and scissors)
• results that can easily be applied to the converting step
The FOGRA rub-off and carbonating test device enables the manufacturer to check in advance, whether printing ink is transfered to adjacent sheets during the converting step by rub-off and/ or carbonating. The test can be easily performed and yields a result at once and without additional cost. With the result of this test in mind it is possible to take appropriate measures to avoid costly complaints.
