The BMW Z1 was introduced at the IAA in 1987 and built from 1989 to 1991 in a limited edition of just 8,000 copies. For the planning and execution of the project in 1985, daughter of BMW Technik GmbH was responsible. Specifically, here are Ulrich Bez and called them designer Harm Lagaay.
The Z1 was designed by BMW as an image carrier and technology.
Following innovations incorporated into the standard product:
By timing belt retractable doors in the side sills. This made it possible for one to go with open doors and on the other side gave the higher the occupants greater security.
Front mid-engine, which brought the weight distribution between front and rear axles on the ideal ratio.
Hot-dip galvanized sheet steel chassis. By galvanizing the entire chassis, a significant increase in torsional rigidity has been achieved.
Thermoplastic body parts (walls, doors, sills and bumpers), which are secured by bolted to the chassis. This should reduce the cost of repairs.
Flaps (front, hood and tailgate) made of fiberglass.
Optimised aerodynamics by smooth underbody and a rear muffler with wing profile. The entire floor is made of fiber-reinforced sandwich material, glued and screwed into the chassis also.
A newly designed rear axle, which was also in the subsequent mass production of the E36 series taken.
To keep costs down was for example included for the drives on high volume parts. Despite only 125 kW (170 hp), the Z1 was well motorized, low weight and the sophisticated suspension allowed high cornering speeds.
From the Z1, there was only one model with no trim levels - the buyer had only the choice of color (initially "toprot", "fungelb", "primary green," "wonderful black" - later called "Pure Blue" and "magic purple") and the interior ( dark gray, light gray, yellow, red).
Specifications Engine: M20 six-cylinder inline engine 2494 cc, 12 valves, 125 kW (170 hp) at 5,800 rpm / min, 222 Nm torque at 4,300 U /
Curb weight: 1,250 kg
Acceleration: 0-100 km / h in 7.9 s, 0-1000 m in 28.8 s
Maximum speed: 225 km / h
Average fuel consumption: 9.2 liters of regular gasoline (91 RON)
The former selling price was approximately 83,000 DM

I am looking for BMW Z1: would be ideal models of Wiesmann hardtop or Lorenz or Alpina.
