Zentralisierte Verwaltung: Mehrere NetVault-Server mit unterschiedlichen Client-Backupzeitplänen und unterschiedlichen Geräten können mit einem zentralen NetVault Domain Management Terminal verwaltet werden. Architektur: BakBone NetVault ist eine Software, die eine Vielzahl von Betriebssystemen unterstützt: u.a. Unix, Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, NetWare, Mac OS, mit vollständiger plattformübergreifender Unterstützung. Shared Memory: Das NetVault-Feature für gemeinsam genutzten Speicher verbessert die Leistung und ermöglicht es dem Administrator, festzulegen, wieviel E/A-Buffer Cache verwendet werden soll und erlaubt so die präzise Anpassung des Backupprozesses. Netzwerkkomprimierung: Für Netzwerke mit geringer Datenbandbreite können die NetVault- Clients Datenblöcke komprimieren, bevor sie sie über das Netzwerk senden, und so den Durchsatz erhöhen. Exakte Image-Wiederherstellung: Wenn Daten wiederhergestellt werden, die geändert, gelöscht, hinzugefügt oder aktualisiert wurden, stellt NetVault das bei der Sicherung auf der Platte bestehende Datei - system-Image präzise wieder her. Selbst wenn die Datensicherung inkrementelle Daten enthält, wird der Originalzustand des Dateisystems sorgfältig wiederhergestellt. Kompatibilität mit Standardbandformaten: Wenn Unix oder Linux verwendet wird, werden die Daten im CPIO-Format geschrieben, unter Windows wird das Standard-Microsoft-Bandformat (MTF) verwendet. Auch wenn NetVault nicht installiert ist, können die Daten mit den Standarddienstprogrammen der Betriebssysteme wiederhergestellt werden. Die Wiederherstellbarkeit der Daten wird hiermit sichergestellt. LAN Free Backup: Durch Kombination von Dynamic Shared Drive (DSD) und SmartClient-Komponenten kann der NetVault-Administrator LANFree Backups erstellen. Backupdaten müssen das LAN nicht passieren, um auf lokal angeschlossene Speichergeräte (via SCSI oder SAN) geschrieben zu werden. So wird das LAN für die Verwendung durch andere Anwendungen freigehalten. Disk-to-disk Backup - Virtual Disk Library (VDL): Durch Erstellung einer virtuellen Bandbibliothek innerhalb eines Festplattendateisystems kann NetVault Daten in seinem virtuellen Bandspeicher-Pool sichern. Die Virtual Disk Library kann als Standalone- Backupspeichergerät eingesetzt werden, gleichgültig, ob ein reales, physisches Bandlaufwerk oder Bandbibliothek existiert oder nicht. Bei der Erstellung einer Virtual Disk Library kann der Benutzer eine beliebige Anzahl virtueller Bandlaufwerke und Medienstellplätze frei wählen sowie die Größe jedes Bands angeben. Jede Virtual Disk Library kann in wenigen Minuten mit der "richtigen Größe” entsprechend dem erforderlichen Backupaufkommen und der Arbeitslast-Kapazität erstellt werden. Die Virtual Disk Library kann außerdem für eine beliebige Anzahl von gleichzeitigen Sicherungen konfiguriert werden, was gegenüber den veralteten Multiplexing- Methoden anderer Lösungen einen großen Vorteil darstellt. Durch Nutzung der VDL wird es möglich, die Backup-Zeitfenster zu reduzieren und Backupoperationen können auch dann gestartet werden, wenn kein physisches Bandspeichergerät vorhanden ist. Backups können online in einer Virtual Disk Library gespeichert werden und später auf ein physisches Band verlagert oder kopiert werden (z.B. nach der Hauptgeschäftszeit), um die Daten außerhalb des Unternehmens zu lagern. In letzter Zeit wählen viele Kunden diese Methode, um die SLA-Wiederherstellungszeit zu minimieren, wobei das aktuellste Backup auf der Virtual Disk gespeichert ist, während ältere Backups auf Band übertragen werden, um diese offline langfristig zu lagern. Shared Virtual Disk Library (SVDL): Eine Virtual Disk Library auf einem via SAN angebundenen Plattensystem kann mit der neuen NetVault-Option Shared Virtual Disk Library von einer Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Betriebssystemen gemeinsam genutzt werden. Ein NetVault-Server und mehrere NetVault-SmartClients können auf die Sicherungs- und Wiederherstellungsdaten einer Virtual Disk Library gleichzeitig zugreifen. Unterstützung verschiedenartiger Medien: NetVault unterstützt Bandbibliotheken, die verschiedene Typen von Medien und Laufwerken enthalten können. Ereignisbenachrichtigung: Vordefinierte und vom Benutzer definierte Ereignisse können aktiviert werden, um die Administratoren rechtzeitig zu informieren, wenn Fehler auftreten oder Prozesse erfolgreich ausgeführt wurden. NetVault kann den Benutzer via Popup-Nachricht oder E-Mail benachrichtigen, einen Bericht oder eine weitere Datensicherung ausführen. BakBone Time: NetVault Server und Clients können Zeitpläne via "BakBone Time" synchronisieren. BakBone Time ist nützlich für IT-Abteilungen, die Backupjobs für eine große Anzahl von Systemen in unterschiedlichen Zeitzonen verwalten müssen. Automatisierte Protokollverwaltung: NetVault löscht automatisch alte Protokolldateien und verhindert so, dass die Protokolle zu viel Festplattenplatz belegen. Der Anwender kann verschiedene Protokollgrößen, Seitenzahlen oder Datumsangaben definieren. NetVault Database (NVDB) Die NetVault Datenbank ist eine der kleinsten Backupindexierungsdatenbanknen auf der Welt. Um Festplattenplatz zu sparen, können ältere Backup-Indexinformationen automatisch komprimiert oder sogar entfernt werden, ohne dabei die Informationen für die Wiederherstellung zu löschen. Die Benutzeraktionen können außerdem via Datenbank-Auditing einfach zurückverfolgt werden, um Fehler oder unzulässige Zugriffsversuche festzustellen. Job Retry: Wenn ein Backupjob aus irgendeinem Grund nicht erfolgreich abgeschlossen wird, besteht die Möglichkeit, eine Option zu aktivieren, mit der NetVault den gleichen Job in regelmäßigen Abständen bis zu 10 Mal erneut versucht. Backup Konsolidierung (Inkrementelle Konsolidierung): Eine inkrementelle Sicherung wird mit einer bestehenden Vollsicherung zusammengeführt und daraus eine neue Volsicherung erstellt, mit der komplette und teilweise Wiederherstellungen erfolgen können. Mit Backup-Konsolidierung muss der NetVault- Administrator nur ein erstes komplettes Backup eines großen Abteilungsdateiservers oder einer Exchange-Datenbank erstellen; ab diesem Zeitpunkt sind nur noch inkrementelle Backups erforderlich. Anschließend wird bei der Konsolidierung in einer Operation, die sich auf den Server, von dem die Daten stammen, nicht auswirkt, synthetisch ein neues vollständiges Backup erstellt. Die Backup-Konsolidierung reduziert nicht nur das Backupzeitfenster, sondern sorgt auch für die Voraussetzungen für rasche, vollständige Wiederherstellung. Vollständige Backups können so häufig wie inkrementelle Backups erstellt werden. Backups durch Firewalls:* In Systemumgebungen, in denen Paket - filter-Firewalls zum Einsatz kommen, kann NetVault die Datenübertragung auf einen bestimmten Portbereich beschränken. Die Firewall-Administratoren müssen nur eine kleine Anzahl beliebig wählbarer Ports öffnen und gewährleisten somit hohe Sicherheit für DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) und andere Systemdaten, ohne dass sich Leistungseinbußen bemerkbar machen. Backup-Clustering:* In einer Clusterumgebung kann NetVault jeden Knoten mit einem NetVault Client sichern und dabei die echte IP-Adresse des Clusters verwenden. NetVault unterstützt eine Vielzahl von Clusterumgebungen von Microsoft Clustern, über Linux und UNIX Clustern bis hin zu Oracle Real Application Clustern. Plugin-Module NetWare Backup: NetVaults NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) unterstützt das Backup von NetWare via NetVaults Thin Client Application Plugin Module (APM), das auf einem NetVault Server installiert wird. Eine VaultDR CD enthält ein automatisch startendes Betriebssystem (VaultOS) und einen NetVault-Client für die Wiederherstellung im Notfall. Die Daten werden auf der Datenquelle mit dem Verschlüsselungsalgorithmus verschlüsselt. Die Verschlüsselung wird auf dem Weg über das Netzwerk und auf dem Bandlaufwerk (Ziel) beibehalten. NDMP Option: NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) wurde zur effizienten Übertragung von großen Datenblöcken über ein LAN oder SAN zu einem Speichergerät entwickelt. Für NAS-Geräte, die NDMP nutzen, werden Backups mit diesem sicheren hochperformanten Protokoll ausgeführt anstelle der weniger effizienten und weniger sicheren Methoden NFS oder CIFS. NetVault kann NDMP-Daten direkt zu einem via SCSI oder SAN angeschlossenen Speichergerät (Band oder virtuelle Bandbibliothek) oder zu einem Speichergerät an anderer Stelle im LAN senden. NetVault bietet vollständige Unterstützung für die NDMP-Versionen 2, 3 und 4. NDMP Snapshot Manager Plugin: Für NetApp Filer mit Snapshot-Lizenzierung bietet NetVault OnTap-Administratoren eine grafische Schnittstelle und Funktionalität für die zentralisierte Planung. NetVault benutzt den Snapshot-Zeitplan von OnTap und erweitert die Snapshot-Planung. NDMP SnapMirror-to-Tape Plugin: Für NetApp Filer mit SnapMirror-Lizenz bietet NetVault die Möglichkeit, einen SnapMirror Snapshot zur Offline-Speicherung und zur Wiederherstellung im Katastrophenfall direkt auf Band zu sichern. SnapMirror-Images können auf anderen NetApp Filer-Systemen wiederhergestellt werden, um Hardwareupgrades oder andere Prozesse bei der Wiederherstellung im Katastrophenfall zu unterstützen. NDMP SnapVault Manager Plugin: Snapshots von NetApp Filer-Systemen mit SnapVault-Lizenzierung und offenen Systemen (Linux / UNIX / Windows, via OSSV-Lizenzierung) können mit der GUI von NetVault überwacht und zeitlich geplant werden. Die Verlagerung von Snapshotdaten kann problemlos von einem zentralisierten Ort aus verwaltet werden, wodurch die Arbeitsbelastung bei der Systemadministration stark reduziert wird.

Quantum Scalar 50 Neu Positioniert zwischen den bewährten Scalar 24 und Scalar i500 Libraries und als Nachfolger der PX500 Serie hat Quantum am 10. September den Scalar 50 vorgestellt. Die Library besitzt 38 Slots (LTO) und kann mit bis zu 4 Laufwerken ausgestattet werden. Abhängig von der gewählten Laufwerkstechnologie sind 2 Gb/4 Gb Fibre Channel, SCSI oder iSSCI Schnittstellen erhältlich. Ein Stacklink Modul erlaubt den Ausbau auf maximal 2 Module für Kunden mit wachsenden Kapazitäts-/und Performance Anforderungen. Der Scalar 50 wurde von Quantum speziell für die Zusammenarbeit mit Disk-Systemen optimiert. Ziel der Entwicklung war, eine reibungslose und anwenderfreundliche Integration von Backup-2-Disk-2-Tape Konzepten in Kundenumgebungen zu ermöglichen. Die Deduplizierungs-Appliances der DXi Serie und der neue Scalar 50 ergeben in der Kombination ein gut eingespieltes Doppel für ein sicheres Backup und schnelles Recovery im Bedarfsfall.
